Faculty Research Awards

The Committee on Faculty Research Awards is pleased to announce grants to support faculty research in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering during the 2020-2021 academic year. Below is a brief description of each award and their application deadlines. To receive more information and/or to download application forms, simply click on the appropriate award type.

All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online. Letters, CVs and other supporting documents should be sent as directed in the attached application form. If you have questions please send an email to frac@tufts.edu.

  1. Do not cut and paste from another grant proposal. Keep in mind that your application will be read by people across the disciplines in Arts & Sciences. Explain the what, why, and how of your research project clearly and concisely so that people outside your field can understand it.
  2. Avoid technical or specialized language.
  3. Be sure to follow the word limit criteria listed for each category.
  4. Explain how the grant money will be spent (in addition to your attached budget).
  5. If the grant is to support a student, explain how the student's work will contribute directly to your own research project.

GIA — Grants-In-Aid - Under $2,000
Eligibility: Tenure-stream faculty members and full-time Professors of the Practice in Arts & Sciences.
This award is typically used as seed money or to cover extra expenses related to a research project or to help support book subventions and illustrations.

FRF — Faculty Research Fund - $2,000 to $6,000
Eligibility: Tenure-stream faculty members and full-time Professors of the Practice in Arts & Sciences.
This award type is limited to a research project with associated costs that range between $2,000 and $6,000.
Deadlines: Monday, September 28, 2020 and Monday, February 1, 2021

SSL — Senior Semester Leave – FT Tenured Faculty Members
Eligibility: Full-time tenured faculty members in Arts & Sciences.
This award type provides tenured faculty members with a paid semester leave to engage in research on a major project and to prepare it for publication. This award may be combined with other sabbatical awards.

MELLON — Up to $5,000
Eligibility: Up to $5,000 funding for tenure-track faculty members while on junior leave.

SUMMER — Summer Fellowships of $8,000 for Arts & Sciences full-time Tenure-Stream Faculty Members
Eligibility: Tenure-stream faculty members in Arts & Sciences.
This award type is awarded in the full amount into the tenure-stream faculty member's research account, to those tenure-stream faculty members who are not receiving other salary support for summer research.

Open Access Publishing — Under $3,000
Eligibility: Applications are open to tenure-stream members of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences.
These awards are solely intended to support publication in truly open access journals, for the express purpose of promoting faculty research and visibility.
Deadline: Applications accepted throughout the academic year until funds are expended.

The DISTINGUISHED SENIOR SCHOLAR AWARD rotates among the following groupings of departments:
1) Arts and Humanities, 2) Social Sciences, 3) Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and 4) Engineering.
In 2020-2021, departments in Arts and Humanities are eligible to nominate a senior faculty member for this award.
Nomination information will be sent to these departments in December 2020, and nominations are due Monday, March 1, 2021.
Eligibility: Senior faculty members in rotating department group.
