Particle Acceleration Site

. Time-of-flight localization of the acceleration site (labeled with a cross) indicates that the energetic flaring electrons originate above the coronal loops detected at soft X-rays and the hard X-ray bursts (contours) located at the loop footpoints. These images were obtained with the hard X-ray (HXT) and soft X-ray (SXT) telescopes aboard the Yohkoh spacecraft at the dates and times indicated on each image. The precise timing of the hard X-rays was obtained with the large-area hard X-ray detectors aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), (Courtesy of Markus J.
