To extract this much coronal detail, several individual images, made with different exposure times, were combined and processed electronically in a computer. The resultant composite image shows the solar corona approximately as it appears to the human eye during totality. Note the fine rays and helmet streamers that extend far from the Sun and correspond to a wide range of brightness. (Courtesy of Fred Espenak.)
