Writing Workshops

I offer one-hour, half-day, full-day, and day-and-a half writing workshops on a variety of topics.  I directed the Writing Across the Curriculum program at Tufts for 6 years, from 1998-2001 and from 2005-2008; and am the author of A Short Guide to Writing About Biology (9th ed).

Typical Workshop Topics:

For Faculty

  • Using informal (ungraded) writing to teach science
  • Stepping Stone Assignments: Short assignments that make students think in productive ways
  • Teaching students to summarize information
  • Giving students something to say: Teaching students to read data
  • Teaching students to write convincing, logical arguments
  • Guiding student revision (and without killing ourselves in the process)— putting the work on the students' shoulders, where it will do the most good
  • Preparing students for peer editing
  • The why and how of designing useful grading rubrics

For Undergraduate Students

  • How to write concise, clear, logically developed lab reports, proposals, and research papers
  • How to create and deliver effective oral presentations
  • How to write effective cover letters

For Graduate Students, Postdocs, and Researchers

  • How to create and deliver effective oral presentations
  • How to design effective PowerPoint presentations
  • Writing brilliant research papers and theses
