RECORD-SETTER KELLY ALLEN SELECTED NESCAC PERFORMER OF THE
WEEK
MEDFORD -- First year thrower Kelly Allen (Norton, MA) of the
Tufts University women's track & field team is making a name for
herself during the 2009-10 season. After her outstanding performance
at the Snowflake Classic hosted by Tufts University this past
Saturday (Apr. 3) at Dussault Track, the New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has selected her as its Field Performer
of the Week.
Allen had been third in the shot put indoors at the New England
Division III Championships, but her best event has proven to be the
discus throw outdoors. On home turf Saturday, she flung the disk
138'10" (42.32m) to qualify nationally and set a new Tufts record in
the event. That distance, currently ranked fourth in the country,
was nearly three feet beyond the 136'2" NCAA provisional qualifying
mark. Allen's mark was 3'7" further than the 20-year old previous
Tufts record of 135'3" set by Toby Dolben in 1990. That had been
tied for the fourth oldest team record outdoors.
Allen competed in all four outdoor throwing events on Saturday. In
addition to winning the discus, she also finished first in the shot
put with a 38'6" (11.73m) best. She took third in the hammer throw
at 130'4" (39.72m) and was fourth in the javelin throw with a 108'9"
(33.14m) heave. The Snowflake Classic was a non-scoring meet, but
had it been scored Allen would have totaled 31 points for Coach
Kristen Morwick's Jumbos.
