BECK IS NESCAC'S PERFORMER OF THE WEEK AFTER 2:11 800
AT NORTHEASTERN
MEDFORD -- Senior co-captain Cat Beck (Brookline,
NH/Hollis-Brookline) of the Tufts University women's outdoor track
team has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference's
(NESCAC) Track Performer of the Week today. Beck ran a sensational 800
meters race at Northeastern University's Solomon Track on Saturday to
earn the honor.
Competing at the Solomon Husky Invitational, Beck
defeated a field of 33 in the 800 with a 2:11.52 time. That was just .02
of a second off the NCAA automatic qualifying time in the event for
Division III and currently stands as the fastest time in the nation.
Well within the NCAA provisional standard, the time is also a new Tufts
record. Beck is the first Jumbo to run a 2:11 800, replacing two-time
indoor 800 national champion Caitlin Murphy from the record book. Murphy
had the previous outdoor record of 2:12.66 in 1999.
Beck has been part of four NESCAC championships for the
Jumbos. She has won the last two 1,500 meters conference titles (2007,
2006) and ran with the conference champion 4x800 meter relays in 2006
and 2005. The 2008 NESCAC championship meet is scheduled for April 26 at
Hamilton College in Clinton, New York.
