NORTHAMPTON -- The Tufts volleyball team continued its excellent play of late with two 3-0 victories against Smith College and Wellesley College on the opening night of play Friday at the 2007 Hall of Fame Induction Tournament at Smith College. The Jumbos have now won six straight matches, their best streak of the season, to improve to a 14-11 record overall.

Tufts defeated host Smith College (14-11) in the first round on Friday by game scores of 30-22, 30-17 and 30-18. Ten kills apiece from junior Stacy Filocco (Olney, MD) and first-year Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA), who also had two aces, were the top offensive numbers. On defense, junior Natalie Goldstein (Piedmont, CA) finished with 23 digs, while Filocco had nine in addition to playing 17 of 18 pass attempts successfully.

The Jumbos then played Wellesley College for the third time this season and gained a 2-1 advantage in the season series with a 30-26, 30-26, 31-29 victory. Tufts has given Wellesley (20-5) two of its five losses now. Filocco and Updike were again the offensive leaders with 11 kills each. Senior captain Katie Wysham (Spokane, WA) had a good all-around match with nine kills, two service aces and six blocks. Goldstein contributed 18 digs, two service aces and 31 for 33 success on pass attempts.

When tournament play continues on Saturday at Smith College, the Jumbos will face MIT in the championship bracket at noon. Williams College and Brandeis University will meet in the other championship bracket match. The winners and losers will play each other at 4:00.
