Caitlin Updike was solid in all facets of the game for Tufts on Saturday

MEDFORD -- After a disappointing showing on the first night of the Fourth Annual Tufts Volleyball Invitational on Friday, the Jumbos rebounded with a split of two games on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym. Tufts defeated SUNY Brockport 3-0, and then took the first game against New England power MIT before losing the match 3-1.

Tufts took fourth place out of six teams in the tournament. After an 0-2 Friday with losses to Wellesley and Elizabethtown, Tufts finished 1-3 for the weekend. MIT and Wellesley College went 4-0 over the two days, but MIT's 12-1 record in games played earned them the tournament title.

The Jumbos took care of Brockport rather easily, with game wins of 30-24, 30-28 and 30-17. Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) continued to assert herself as one of the top first-year players in the region with eight kills, three service aces and 15 digs in the match. Another first-year Jumbo, Dawson Joyce-Mendive (Minden, NV), was the leader offensively with 11 kills, while sophomore Brogie Helgeson (Santa Cruz, CA) had nine and junior Kate Denniston (Tarzana, CA) totaled seven. Defensively, junior Natalie Goldstein (Piedmont, CA) chipped in with 14 digs.

Tufts had a great start against MIT. The Jumbos played with the lead for most of the first game before they had to go extra to win 34-32. The Engineers, who are 19-1 after the weekend, regrouped and won the next three games 30-25, 30-19 and 30-19. Joyce-Mendive again led the Jumbos with 13 kills, getting assistance from Helgeson's nine and eight from Updike. Senior captain Katie Wysham (Spokane, WA) had six blocks in the four games, three solos and three assists. Joyce-Mendive and Goldstein each recorded 15 digs, while sophomore setter Dena Feiger (Long Grove, IL) finished with 22 assists and 14 digs.

Tufts has the week off until they host Amherst in a NESCAC match next Saturday at Cousens beginning at 12:00.
