MEDFORD -- The fourth annual Tufts Volleyball
Invitational did not get off to a good start for the Jumbos on Friday
night. They were unable to hold a 2-0 lead against Wellesley College in
their first match of the tournament, and then they lost 3-0 to
Elizabethtown College, visiting from Pennsylvania, in the second match
of the night.
Play continues at the Tufts Invitational on Saturday.
The host Jumbos face SUNY Brockport on the Cousens Gym floor at 1:00 pm.
They finish tournament action at Cousens against neighboring rival MIT
in a 4:00 match. Tufts is 7-8 overall after the losses on Friday.
The Jumbos had a great start to their fourth annual
tournament. They jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first game against
Wellesley and won 30-26.
They demolished Wellesley in the second game 30-14. It sure didn't seem
likely that they would not win another game for the rest of the night. However, the tide
turned as Wellesley hung in there to post 30-19 and 30-21 victories to
force a fifth and deciding game. It was close throughout, but Wellesley
(8-2) won 15-13 in the end to finish off their comeback. The Jumbos had
blanked Wellesley at the MIT Invitational last weekend.
First-year Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) was the only
Jumbo who hit at better than 25-percent for the offense, recording 14
kills with just one error in 38 tries. She also had all three of the
team's service aces. Twin towers Katie Wysham (Spokane, WA) and
Kate Denniston (Tarzana, CA) combined for 13 blocks, with Wysham
recording seven solos and Denniston going up for four on her own. Junior
Natalie Goldstein (Piedmont, CA) led Tufts with 27 digs.
Elizabethtown (14-3), defeated by Wellesley 3-0 in the night's second
match, rallied for a shutout of the Jumbos with game scores of 30-27,
31-29 and 30-20. Updike again led the Jumbo offense with 12 kills. She
also added two aces and 14 digs. Classmate Dawson Joyce-Mendive
(Minden, NV) had 10 and sophomore Brogie Helgeson (Santa Cruz,
CA) nine. Junior Kaitlin O'Reilly (Manhattan Beach, CA)
racked up 39 assists in the three games. Wysham continued to be a wall
on defense, at one point blocking four consecutive Elizabethtown
attempts on the same play.
