SOMERVILLE -- Hosting the annual Snowflake Classic at the Ding
Dussault Track at Ellis Oval, the Tufts University women's outdoor
track & field team saw three athletes hit NCAA provisional
qualifying marks on Saturday afternoon. Two of the three broke
school records.
Contrary to the name of the meet, the weather was perfect for the
first home meet of the season at Tufts. Sophomore Heather Theiss
(North Woodmere, NY) qualified in the pole vault with an 11'9"
(3.58m) best. That winning performance was over the 11'7 3/4"
provisional mark, and extended her own school record of 11'5 3/4" set
earlier this season. First year Kelly Allen (Norton, MA)
qualified in the discus throw, winging it 138'10" (42.32m) for a victory
in the event. That was beyond the 136'2" qualifying mark, and broke the
20-year old Tufts record of 135'3" set by Toby Dolben in 1990.
Sophomore Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA) also qualified
provisionally in the triple jump. She won the event with a 37'9 1/4"
(11.51m) best jump.
Tufts won five events overall at the non-scoring meet. Junior
Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) finished the 200 meters in 26.62
seconds for first place. She was also second in the long jump with 17'
1/2" (5.19m) distance and second in the triple jump at 36'10 1/2"
(11.24m). Allen added a 38'6" (11.73m) shot put victory.
Other runner-up efforts on home turf came from senior Logan Crane
(Portland, ME) in the 100 meters (12.85 seconds), senior co-captain
Andrea Ferri (Dracut, MA) in the 400 meter hurdles (1:07.74),
sophomore Dayorsha Collins (Boston, MA) in the high jump
(5'3"/1.60m), senior Julia Feltus (Reading, MA) in both the shot
put (37'10"/11.53m) and hammer throw (147'0"/44.82m), junior Sarah
Nolet (Los Altos, CA) in the javelin throw (114'6"/34.90m) and the
4x400 meter relay (4:17.42). The Tufts foursome was sophomore Kayley
Pettoruto (Andover, MA), sophomore Sarah Boudreau (Sherborn, MA),
sophomore Grace Perry (Chicago, IL), and sophomore Lauren
Flament (Shelton, CT).
Coach Kristen Morwick's Jumbos are at the George Davis Invitational
hosted by UMass Lowell next weekend.
