Nakeisha Jones surpassed the NCAA provisional mark in the triple jump during her first meet of the season

MEDFORD -- Sophomore Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA) of the Tufts women's indoor track & field team opened the 2010 season in fine fashion by posting an NCAA provisional qualifying distance in the triple jump at the Tufts Invitational held at the Gantcher Center on Saturday afternoon.

Jones was one of six Tufts winners who helped Coach Kristen Morwick's team win the meet with a score of 199 points. The Jumbos edged Division II UMass Lowell, which finished the seven-team competition in second with 177 points.

Jones, an indoor All-American in the triple last winter, jumped 37'5" (11.41m) on Saturday. That was almost seven inches beyond the 36'10 1/4" NCAA provisional standard.

Junior Andrea Caruth (Vauxhall, NJ) debuted for 2010 with a victory in the 400 meters with a 1:04.70 time. She won that race by almost five seconds. The 800 meter run was much closer, with Tufts sophomore Kayley Pettoruto (Andover, MA) winning by 0.23 seconds with her 2:29.16 time.

Tufts won a pair of relay events on their home floor, with the 4x4's 4:13.08 finish and a 10:19.49 time by the 4x800 group. Sophomore Sadie Lansdale (Bethesda, MD) took the 5,000 meters race, as her 19:59.85 time edged teammate Kelsey Picciuto's (Cornwall, NY) 19:59.89 mark by a very thin margin.

The Jumbos travel to the Wheaton College Invitational next Saturday.
