AMHERST -- First-year Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA) of the Tufts
women's outdoor track & field team went a stunning 40'10 (12.45m) in
the triple jump during an outstanding meet for the Jumbos at the 2009
All-New England Championships hosted by UMass on Friday and Saturday.
Jones obliterated the Tufts record of 40'1 set by eight-time
national champion Vera Stenhouse in 1989. She also established the best
mark in the nation this season by far, beating the NCAA automatic
qualifying mark of 39'4 by almost 18 inches. Jones won the New
England title by nine and three-quarter inches over second-place Jesse
Labreck from Division 1 Maine.
That performance was the stand-out of several accomplishments by
Coach Kristen Morwick's team. Sophomore Stephanie McNamara (North
Attleborough, MA) also improved upon her NCAA automatic qualifying
mark in the 1,500 meters, running a 4:28.82 time. She was fourth at the
meet.
The team set two other school records. The 4x800 meter relay foursome
of sophomore Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA), first-year Kayley
Pettoruto (Andover, MA), senior tri-captain Jackie Ferry (Studio
City, CA) and McNamara ran a 9:10.63 time that bettered the previous
Jumbo standard of 9:14.99 set in 2007. Sophomore Sarah Nolet (Los
Altos, CA) broke the 24-year old javelin record with her 120'1
(36.6m) launch during the heptathlon. Nicole Crepeau had the previous
record of 119'9 from 1985.
Nolet and junior Andrea Ferri (Dracut, MA) both scored NCAA
provisional qualifying points in the heptathlon. Ferri's 4,248 points
were fourth and Nolet's 4,121 were seventh at the meet. Ferri achieved
PR's in five of the seven events, scoring 757 points with a time of
26.47 seconds in the 200 meters. Her final score is second-best all-time
at Tufts.
First-year Dayorsha Collins (Boston, MA) and sophomore
Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) also scored at the meet for Tufts,
which placed 13th overall with 32.5 points. Collins tied for fifth in
the high jump, topping out at 5'2 (1.59m). Kabonga was seventh in the
triple at 37'2 (11.33m).
The Jumbos are at Springfield College May 14-15 for the ECAC
Championships, the last meet before NCAA's.
