Steph McNamara has the nation's fastest 5K for Division 3

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Running against a field of primarily Division 1 athletes under the lights at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium, sophomore Stephanie McNamara (North Attleborough, MA) of the Tufts University women's outdoor track team submitted a big-time performance in the 5,000 meters on Friday night.

McNamara ran 16:51.22 to place second in the race out of 46 entries. The time is almost four seconds faster than the NCAA Division 3 automatic standard of 16:55, and it was also better than the NCAA Div. 1 standard of 16:52. It improves her previous qualifying time of 17:16.73 run at Stonehill College on April 4.

The winning time at the Larry Ellis Invitational was 16:31.47 by Natasha Labeaud.

The rest of the Jumbo team competes at Dartmouth College on Saturday.
