Amy Wilfert won the 5,000 meter run by more
than a minute

MEDFORD � The Tufts University women�s outdoor track & field team was
out in full force to open the 2009 season at the annual Snowflake
Classic at home at Ellis Oval/Dussault Track. The Jumbos scored 149.5
points to place second out of 16 teams, featuring a wide array of
collegiate competition.
Sophomore Steph McNamara (North Attleborough, MA) led Tufts by
doubling in the 800 meter run and 1,500 meter run. Two weeks after
helping Tufts win the indoor distance medley relay title and placing
second in the NCAA 5,000 meters, McNamara won the 1,500 with an NCAA
provisional qualifying time of 4:37.35 and also was first in the 800
(2:19.85). She won the 1,500 by over 16 seconds. Teammate Kayley
Pettoruto (Andover, MA) was third in the 800 (2:25.30).
Fellow DMR indoor champion Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA)
debuted outdoors strong, winning the 5,000 meter run by over a full
minute with her 18:09.20 time. Jumbos also won the pole vault and shot
put events. First-year Heather Theiss (North Woodmere, NY)
cleared 10�9� (3.27m) in the pole vault and senior tri-captain Paula
Dormon (Brockton, MA) had a best throw of 40�0 �� (12.21m) in the
shot.
The 4x100 meter relay was the runner-up behind Division I Boston
University. First-year Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA), senior
Halsey Stebbins (Chicago, IL), junior Andrea Ferri (Dracut, MA)
and junior Logan Crane (Portland, ME) ran a time of 49.66
seconds. Sophomore Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) took second in
the triple jump at 36�3� (11.05m) and sophomore Sarah Nolet (Los
Altos, CA) was the second-place finisher in the javelin throw
(113�11�/34.73m).
Crane also scored third in the long jump with 17�6 �� (5.34m)
distance and was fourth in the 100 meter dash (12.62).
Boston University won the meet with a 181 score, followed by Tufts,
Bates (98), RPI (77.5) and Boston College (60).
The Jumbos compete at the Stonehill Invitational next Saturday (Apr.
4).
