BOSTON -- Highlighted by the first-place performance of the distance medley relay team, Tufts University women's indoor track & field tied for 11th place at the 2009 New England Open Championships hosted by Boston University on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the DMR ran a time of 11:56.72 to win the title from among a field of Division I, II and III teams at the meet. The University of New Hampshire DMR was second in 11:57.76 and the University of Connecticut DMR was third with a 12:01.51 finish. The Jumbo line-up was sophomore Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA), senior Halsey Stebbins (Chicago, IL), senior tri-captain Jackie Ferry (Studio City, CA) and sophomore Stephanie McNamara (North Attleborough, MA). The time improves upon that foursome's previous NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 12:08.69.

Wilfert also ran an individual NCAA provisional time of 5:00.85 (which will be converted due to the banked track at BU) for sixth place at the meet. That also improves upon her previous NCAA mark of 5:04.15. McNamara posted the highest individual Tufts finish at the Open New England's by crossing the finish line third in the 3,000 meters (9:57.50).

First-year Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA) went beyond the NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the triple jump at 38'6" (11.73m) to place fourth at the meet. She's currently ranked first in the nation in the event with the 39'3" (11.96m) she launched at the Terrier Invitational at BU on January 23. Junior Logan Crane (Portland, ME) also scored for the Jumbos on Friday, taking eighth overall in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.35 seconds.

Tufts scored 25 points overall to tie for 11th place with Sacred Heart University. UConn won the team championship with 186.5 points. The Jumbos host the ECAC Division III Championships at the Gantcher Center next weekend (Mar. 6-7).
