First-year Heather Theiss set a new pole vault record for the second time this season

MEDFORD -- First-year Heather Theiss (North Woodmere, NY) broke the school record in the pole vault again and missed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark by an inch and a quarter on Saturday to highlight the Tufts women's indoor track & field team's third home meet of the season at the Gantcher Center.

Theiss was the top collegiate vaulter at the meet with a best effort of 11'2 1/2", the same height successfully reached by unattached competitor Jilena DeCarteret. Theiss's mark surpasses her previous record of 10'8" cleared at the first Tufts Invitational on January 17 at Gantcher. The NCAA provisional mark is 11'3 3/4" for the Division III pole vault.

The Tufts 4x800 meter relay team had a winning time of 10:04.84. The Jumbo foursome was sophomore Jen Yih (Palo Alto, CA), Senior Amy Hopkins (Williston, VT), first-year Lauren Flament (Shelton, CT) and sophomore Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA).

Tufts coach Kristen Morwick rested some of her top performers in the non-scoring meet. However, shot put senior Paula Dormon (Brockton, MA) took her normal turn and had one of the best throws of her career. Her 41'2 1/4" throw was second at the meet and was a jump of four feet from her previous best mark this season. She now ranks #2 in New England.

Wilfert, an NCAA qualifier during the fall cross country season, continued to establish herself in the track middle distance and distance events. She was the top collegiate performer on Saturday in the 1,000 meters with a 3:01.45 time.

First-year Dayorsha Collins (Boston, MA) was the second collegiate finisher in the high jump, topping out at 5'3" (1.60m). Sophomore Kayley Maykranz (Jackson, WY) had another Jumbo second-place with her 1:02.71 time in the 400 meters.

Tufts competes at the BU Valentine Invitational next weekend in their last action before the championship season begins.
