MEDFORD -- The Tufts University women's indoor track & field team hosted
the first of its four meets at the Gantcher Center on Saturday and
debuted at home with some outstanding performances. Coach Kristen
Morwick's team placed second out of nine teams overall, scoring 170
points.
First-year Dayorsha Collins (Boston, MA) won the high jump by
clearing 5'5 " (1.66m), a height that provisionally qualifies her for
the NCAA championships. Sophomore Stephanie McNamara (North
Attleborough, MA) won the 3,000 meters in a 10:06.70 time that was
25 seconds ahead of the rest of the field and was the second-fastest
time in team history. Capping a trio of highlights was a school-record
pole vault of 10'8 " turned in by first-year Heather Theiss
(Hewlett, NY) to win that event. The former record of 10'6" was set
by Myriam Claudio in 2003.
Tufts won seven events overall, including all three relays. In the 4x200
race, senior Jennifer Johnson (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA), junior
Andrea Ferri (Dracut, MA), senior tri-captain Jackie Ferry
(Studio City, CA) and first-year Shantal Richards (Dorchester,
MA) put down a winning time of 1:51.87. In the 4x4, Johnson again
led off and Ferry was the anchor of a foursome joined by first-years
Amanda Parker (North Attleborough, MA) and Nicole Priscal (Miami,
FL) that won with a 4:15.09 time.
The 4x8 was a two-team race, won by Tufts in 10:06.13. First-year
Caroline Melhado (Boulder, CO) won out of a short field in the 5K,
running 20:22.14.
Runner-up performances came from Ferry in the 400 (1:02.71), sophomore
Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA) in the 1,000 (3:05.32), junior
Logan Crane (Portland, ME) in the long jump (16'2 ", 4.93m),
sophomore Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) in the triple jump (33'0
", 10.06m) and sophomore Kelly Smith (Zionsville, PA) in the
weight throw (41'10 ", 12.76m).
UMass Lowell won the meet with a 211 score. The Jumbos compete at BU
next Friday.
