PHILADELPHIA -- All-American Cat Beck (Brookline, NH)
continued her outstanding senior season for the Tufts women's track team
by traveling south for more than 300 miles and seven hours through
traffic on Thursday to the Penn Relays. Competing in the 5,000 meters at
8:25 in the evening, about an hour after she arrived, Beck ran a school
record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:41.97.
Held at legendary Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania
campus, the Penn Relays are the nation's oldest and largest relay
carnival. Running in a very competitive field as the only Division III
entrant, Beck finished sixth in the college women's 5K. She was more
than 13 seconds faster than the NCAA automatic time of 16:55, and it is
the nation's fastest time in the event for Division III entering the
weekend.
In the Tufts record book, she improves her own 5K mark from the
16:51.04 set in 2006. Arriving back at Tufts on Friday morning, Beck
will travel with the team to Hamilton College later in the day for the
2008 NESCAC Championships in Clinton, New York on Saturday.
Beck also has NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the 800 meters and
the 1,500 meters. She ran a 2:11.52 800 at Northeastern on April 12,
just .02 of a second off the NCAA automatic time. Her 1,500 time of
4:37.81 was at home in the Snowflake Classic on March 29.
