STONEHILL -- Still very early in the outdoor season, the Tufts women's
outdoor track & field team traveled to Stonehill College on Saturday for
the Skyhawk Invitational and took third place with 95.5 points. The
field of 11 was won by Boston College with 125.5 points.
Tufts received a versatile performance from junior Paula Dormon
(Brockton, MA). She led Jumbos in second, third and fifth place for
the hammer throw, finishing as runner-up with a toss of 119' flat
(36.28m). Senior Sarah Martin (Woonsocket, RI) was close behind
in third with 118' 9" distance (36.19m) and first-year Kelly Smith
(Zionsville, PA) took fifth at 117' 7" (35.85m). Dormon was also
fourth in the shot put at 38' 1/4" (11.59m), competed in the discus
throw, and ventured outside of the throwing circle to lead off the 4x100
relay that was runner-up in 51.29 seconds.
The only Tufts win of the day came from senior Katy O'Brien (North
Easton, MA) in the 1,500 meters with a 4:41.73 time. Senior
co-captain Kaleigh Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) showed off her
athleticism by scoring in four events. She ran the second leg in the
4x1, was fourth in the 100 dash (12.79 seconds), ran fifth in the 200
(26.27) and was fifth in the long jump with a best leap of 16' 1/2"
(4.89m).
First-year Kelly Engelking (Westborough, MA), the youngest of
three Jumbo track & field athletes, including older brothers Derek and
Jared, scored in two events at Stonehill. She was sixth in the javelin
and eighth in the pole vault.
The Jumbos compete at Northeastern University next Saturday.
