DEDHAM -- Senior Catherine Beck (Brookline, MA) of the Tufts
women's outdoor track & field team burned through the 800 meters at
Northeastern University's Solomon Husky Invitational on Saturday,
running a 2:11.52 time that narrowly missed the NCAA automatic
qualifying mark in the third week of the season. The finish is a new
Tufts outdoor 800 meters record, erasing the nine-year old time of
2:12.66 put in the books by Caitlin Murphy in 1999.
Beck won the event at Northeastern with
her national provisional qualifying mark, which was just .02 of a second
off the automatic standard of 2:11.50. That led the Jumbos in the
non-scoring meet. Beck is also qualified nationally in the 1,500 meters.
Tufts also received an excellent performance from sophomore Logan
Crane (Porland, ME). She won the 200 meter dash by finishing in
25.92 seconds and also was the best in the field for the long jump,
reaching 17 feet flat (5.18m).
Three Jumbos were second-best at the meet. Senior co-captain
Kaleigh Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) ran 58.97 seconds in the 400
meters. Sophomore Stephanie McNamara (North Attleborough, MA)
crossed the finish line in 18:04.82 for the 5K. First-year multi-athlete
Sarah Nolet (Los Altos, CA) completed the 400 hurdles in 1:11.33
for runner-up honors.
The Jumbo relays swept across the board in small fields. The 4x100
topped a three-team race in 49.77 seconds and the 4x400 was the fastest
of six teams in 4:08 flat. The 4x8 group was the lone entrant and had a
10:09 31 time.
Tufts will stay local again next week when they compete in the MIT
Invitational.
