MEDFORD -- The Tufts University women's outdoor track & field season opened its 2007 season on Saturday by hosting the annual Snowflake Classic. Amidst a strong field including Division I teams, the Jumbos had some fine season-opening performances on an unseasonably nice day in Greater Boston. The meet was non-scoring.

Junior Cat Beck (Brookline, NH) won the 5,000 meters with a time of 17 minutes 3.03 seconds that is an NCAA provisional qualifier. The automatic qualifying time is 17 minutes flat. Head coach Kristen Morwick's team also got a distance win from junior Anna Shih (Pittsford, NY) in the 3,000 meter steeple chase with an 11:51.06 time.

Another notable performance came from the 4 x 100 meter relay of senior Jess Mactas (New Canaan, CT), first-year Andrea Ferri (Dracut, MA), junior Kaleigh Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) and first-yera Logan Crane (Portland, ME) with a time of 50.01 seconds for third place behind BU and Northeastern. Crane was also the only non-DI runner to make the final in the 100 meter dash, placing eighth with a time of 13 seconds flat.

Strong fourth-place finishes were also submitted by sophomore Jackie Ferry (Studio City, CA) in the 400 meters (1:01.94) and by classmate Paula Dormon (Brockton, MA) in the shot put (37' 1 1/4"). Dormon was first among non-DI throwers.

The Jumbos compete at the Coast Guard Invitational next Saturday (Apr. 7).
