-- One week after running the fastest 5,000 meters in the nation this
season, along with helping the distance medley relay to the nation's
fastest team, Tufts junior Cat Beck (Brookline, NH) was at it
again on Saturday at the Tufts Stampede held at the Gantcher Center.
Beck broke her own record in the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 53.45
seconds that automatically qualifies her in the event for the NCAA
Championships. The time stands as the fastest in the country to date.
Junior Sarah Martin (Woonsocket, RI) also broke her own team
indoor record in the weight throw, reaching 46' 4 3/4" for third place.
Her old mark of 46' 2" was set last year.
Tufts finished third in team scoring with 106.5 points, behind
first-place Williams (210) and second-place UMass Lowell (111.167).
Fourteen teams overall competed in the meet.
Also running well for the Jumbos was junior Kaleigh Fitzpatrick
(Lynnfield, MA) with a time 59.22 seconds to finish first in the 400
meters. Senior tri-captain Sarah Crispin (Auburn, ME) scored
first-place points in the 800 meters, as her time of 2:17.46 was second
behind an unattached entrant. Both of those times are the best in New
England Division III this season, as was the 1:48.48 ran by Aubrey
Wasser (Richmond, VT), Halsey Stebbins (Chicago, IL), Jess
Mactas (New Canaan, CT) and Andrea Ferri (Dracut, MA) in the
4x200 relay.
Tufts scored 21 points in the 800 meters
overall, with sophomore Jackie Ferry (Studio City, CA) running
2:19.86 and junior Katy O'Brien (North Easton, MA) recording a
2:20.01 finish.
The Jumbos also got a runner-up performance in the high jump from
junior Joyce Uang (Medford, MA), who cleared 5 feet, 1 3/4
inches. The Jumbos earned two thirds in the weights, with sophomore
Paula Dormon (Brockton, MA) throwing 39' 9 3/4" in the shot put to
join Martin in the weight throw.
The Jumbo relays scored big, with the 4x4 winning in 4:04.79 and the
4x2 placing second. The victorious 4x4 was Crispin, Ferry, Kate Makai
(Brookfield, CT) and Ferri.
