BOSTON -- Sophomore Catherine Beck (Brookline, NH) further established herself as one of the region's up-and-coming distance runners by placing second in the mile at the 2006 New England Open women's indoor track & field championships hosted by Boston University on Friday and Saturday.

Beck finished in four minutes, 55.39 seconds, erasing a 29-year old record in the Tufts books. Kathy Whitcomb had the old mark of 4:56.1 from 1977. Beck now owns two Jumbo marks after setting the 5k record of 17:09.18 at BU on January 28. On Saturday, she was edged by Providence College's Katie DiCamillo (4:55.22). Converted to a 4:55.89 due to the banked track at BU, Beck's time improved her national ranking to #3 in the event as well.

The Distance Medley Relay also had a top notch performance, running third with a 12:01.14 time. Sophomore Katy O'Brien (North Easton, MA) led off with a 1,200, followed by sophomore Joyce Uang (Medford, MA) for 400, Beck for 800 and junior Sarah Crispin (Auburn, ME) for 1,600. The time is the third-best in Tufts history and improves the Tufts national qualifying time in the event to #6 nationally (12:02.74 converted).

Senior tri-captain Becca Ades (Shelburne, VT) added a ninth place effort in the 5,000 meters with a 17:50.60 time. Uang was 13th in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 1 inch.

Tufts took 17th place overall by scoring 14 points in those two events. UConn won the New England title with 181.83 points. The Jumbos were sixth among New England Division III teams.
