CAMBRIDGE - During a weekend when the Tufts University women's indoor track & field team split between the St. Valentine Invitational at Boston University on Friday and the MIT Invitational on Saturday, the Jumbos primarily used the MIT meet as a tune-up for the upcoming New England Division III Championships at the Gantcher Center next Saturday.
The top individual performance at MIT was by freshman Paula Dormon (Brockton, MA who set a personal record and won in the shot put, throwing 39 feet, 1.25 inches. The distance places her seventh in New England.
The foursome of junior Maggie Clary (Grantham, NH), senior tri-captain Megan Sears (Washington Depot, CT), freshmen Kathleen Rutecki (Milton, MA), and senior Daniela Fairchild (Somerset, MA) competed in several events at MIT to prepare for the pentathlon at the New England meet. They finished the 55 meter hurdles in spots 6, 8, 10, and 11, respectively, at MIT. Fairchild was also fourth in the 800 (2:29.36).
Freshman Katie Rizzolo (Franklin, MA) also qualified for the New England's in the 3000 meters after finishing in second place with an 11:00.51 time, strong after coming off an injury that had her benched for over a month. She was the runner-up in the event.
Tufts now enters the championship season.
