BOSTON -- The Tufts University Women's Indoor Track & Field team had some great performances at the season-opening Husky Winter Carnival hosted by Northeastern University on Saturday.
Sophomore Sarah Crispin (Auburn, ME) was one of many Jumbos who hit qualifying marks for the various championship meets coming up later in the season. She reached the All-New England mark with a time of 3 minutes, 3.06 seconds in the 1,000 meters for fourth place overall. She was followed closely by senior
Katie Sheedy (Reading, MA) in sixth place with a 3:06.49 time. Both are looking to go under 3:00 this year.
Freshman Laura Walls (Clarksville, MD) ran a good mile in her first collegiate event, taking fourth place overall with a 5:15.18 time. Classmate
Jenna Weir (New York, NY) started her Jumbo career with a fourth place in the Triple Jump, reaching 33 feet, 9 /14 inches. Classmate
Marisa Mann (Woodmere, NY) took ninth in the 800 meters with a 2:23.81 in her collegiate debut. Four Jumbos reached qualifying marks in the 500 meters, with sophomore
Kate Makai (Brookfield, CT) running 1:21.54 for ninth place and senior
Claudia Clarke (Lynn, MA) timing 1:22.23 for 10th place.
In the 5,000 meters, senior Emily Pfeil (Andover, MA) was ninth in 19:21.67 and sophomore
Jenny Torpey (Bellingham, WA) crossed the finish line in 19:35.55 for 10th, both hitting the New England Division III standard. That's an indoor PR for Torpey by 20 seconds, and it was Pfeil's first 5k in track. Junior
Becca Ades's (Shelburne, VT) 17:51.81 time that was scored third at the meet was actually a lap short and ruled invalid.
Senior Jess Colby (Medford, MA) had a good day in the shot put and weight throw, finishing 9th in the shot (35-1 1/4) and 7th in the weight (40-7 3/4). Sophomore
McKenzie Rawcliffe (Winterport, ME) had a 10th place finish in the triple jump (32-10 1/4) and Makai, sophomore
Daniela Fairchild (Somerset, MA), Clarke and sophomore Rachel Bloom (Sharon, MA) combined for a 4:09.52 time that was ninth in the 4x400 meter relay.
"We're a well-rounded team and we're pretty deep," head coach Kristen Morwick said. "We have key people in the sprints, jumps, mid-distance, and distance groups. We should improve in those events over last year."
