DECATUR, IL -- How appropriate that in the last event of her collegiate career, Tufts University senior superstar
Jessica Trombly (Nashua, NH) won the NCAA Division III national championship in the 400 meter hurdles on Saturday at the NCAA track & field championships hosted by Millikin University.
Trombly's time of 59.98 seconds edged Carthage College sophomore Sheana Grisby's time of 60.03 seconds to win the title. It is the first national championship for the Tufts team since Caitlin Murphy won the second of back-to-back indoor 800 meters titles in 2000. The championship closed a remarkable Tufts career for Trombly, who also played soccer and was one of the finest female athletes in school history.
Senior Lauren Caputo (Belmont, MA) also closed her career in fine fashion, scoring for the Jumbos with an eighth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Her time was 11 minutes, 4.13 seconds. Sophomore
Becca Ades (Shelburne, VT) also ran in the steeplechase and was 13th with a 11:12.18 time.
The Tufts 4x400 meter relay team also qualified. Trombly joined senior
Emily Bersin (Orleans, MA), sophomore Rachel Bloom (Sharon, MA) and junior
Sika Henry (Upper Montclair, NJ) in an event that they were second in at the NCAA indoor championships in March. They couldn't match that effort, running 3:54.17 to finish ninth, just shy advancing to the final.
The Jumbos had six athletes total competing at the meet. Trombly and Caputo scored 11 points for Head Coach Kristen Morwick's team, earning a tie for 21st place among 76 teams who scored at the meet.
