SPRINGFIELD -- The Tufts University Women's Track and Field team turned in a fine second-place performance at the New England Division III Championships, held on Saturday at Springfield College. The Jumbos scored 86 points, second to Williams' 180 points. Third-place Amherst had 80 points.
Tufts placed 14 individuals or relays in the top five finishers in 12 events, including top five finishes in all three relays. They also had four individuals and a relay qualify for the NCAA meet later this month.
The relays were led by the winning 4x400 relay team of senior captain
Emily Bersin (Orleans, MA), sophomore Rachel Bloom (Sharon, MA), junior
Sika Henry (Upper Montclair, NJ) and senior captain Jessica Trombly (Nashua, NH), who finished with a time of 3 minutes, 57.39 seconds, well ahead of Williams' second-place team that finished in 4:05.24. The time was also a provisional national qualifier by a nose.
The 4x100 Meter Relay team, which won the NESCAC title a week before, finished in third place with a time of 49.42 seconds, run by senior
Shushanna Mignott (Hartford, CT), Trombly, freshman Jess Mactas (New Canaan, CT) and Bloom. The 4x800 Meter Relay team of sophomore
Becca Ades (Shelburne, VT), junior Katie Sheedy (Reading, MA), freshman
Kate Makai (Brookfield, CT) and senior captain Katie Higley (Raymond, ME) took fifth with a time of 9:54.32.
Trombly took home two individual titles, capturing the 100 Meter Hurdle championship with a time of 15.12 seconds and also winning the 400 Meter Hurdles in a time of 1:02.53. She entered the 100 Meter Hurdles seeded second after the preliminaries but came back to win by 0.43 seconds. Her time in the 400 Hurdles provisionally qualified for Nationals. Bersin also placed in the top five in the 400 Meter Hurdles, finishing fourth with a time of 1:05.68.
The Jumbos had multiple top-five finishers in one other event, the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, as Ades finished second with a time of 11:05.46, followed by senior tri-captain
Lauren Caputo (Belmont, MA) in 11:08.10. Both provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship meet.
Also earning a provisional qualifying mark for the Jumbos was junior
Melissa Graveley (Schenectady, NY) with a High Jump of 5'5" that she reached as part of the Heptathlon.
