HARTFORD -- After competing in a rigorous indoor season, the women's track and field team took a few weeks off and started its outdoor season on Saturday at Trinity College in the non-scoring Trinity College "Bantam" Invitational.
Senior Kate Gluckman (Morrisville, VT) began her field season with a bang by placing first in the shot put and third in the discus throw. She out-distanced the shot competition with a 39-foot, 5-inch toss and hung with the discus leaders by making a toss of 113-11.
With senior tri-captain Jess Trombly (Nashua, NH) sitting out of the meet, the sprint races were dominated for Tufts by sophomore
Rachel Bloom (Sharon, MA). She placed second in the 100 meter dash (12.90 seconds) and fourth in the 200 (26.76).
Junior Sika Henry (Upper Montclair, NJ) showed her various talents. After placing sixth in the 800 (2 minutes, 22.92 seconds), she topped the high jump field by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches. Also running in the distance sprints, senior
Emily Bersin (Orleans, MA) held her own in the 400, finishing in third place with a time of 1:01.22.
Tufts was once again well-represented in long distance races. Freshman
Sarah Crispin (Auburn, ME), senior tri-captain Lauren Caputo (Belmont, MA), junior
Katie Sheedy (Reading, MA), and sophomore Rebecca Ades (Shelburne, VT) finished third, fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively in the 1,500. Also, senior Lauren Dunn (Daytona Beach, FL) ran for 39:19.69 to capture third place in the 10,000.
In the hurdles, two freshmen got a chance to show their skills. In the 100,
Kenzie Rawcliffe (Winterport, ME) took fifth in a time of 16.70 seconds and in the 400
Kate Makai (Brookfield, CT) placed fourth in 1:08.96.
Senior Jessica Gauthier (Saugus, MA) and junior Jessica Colby (Medford, MA) also had good days in the field, placing fifth and sixth place in the shot put respectively. Gauthier also grabbed fifth in the hammer throw (123-04) and sixth in the discus throw (105-03).
