#2 WILLIAMS COLLEGE SNEAKS PAST TUFTS FOR 1-0 NESCAC
COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER FINAL SCORE
Williams 1, Tufts 0
At Williamstown, MA
Saturday, October 24, 2009
WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Tufts women's soccer team, which gave Williams
its last regular-season loss back on October 21, 2006 in Somerville,
played down to the wire with the second-ranked Ephs today before losing
the NESCAC game 1-0 on a late goal.
Playing under a sheet of heavy rain for most of today's contest, the
Jumbos (7-5-1, 4-3-1 NESCAC) and the undefeated Ephs (13-0-0, 8-0-0)
engaged in a scoreless contest for nearly 86 before senior captain
Brianna Wolfson tapped in a late-minute goal to stave off a repeat of
history for Williams.
Since that last 1-0 loss to Tufts in 2006, the Ephs have put together
a 41-0-1 regular-season record. With a tie or win against Middlebury on
Friday, the Ephs will have played three straight seasons of undefeated
soccer in the regular season.
With the weather as a potential equalizer, the teams played the first
45 minutes with no goals and a 10-6 advantage in shots for Williams. The
Ephs came out stronger in the second half, out-shooting Tufts 17-4 in
the second period. Despite the increased offensive attack, the Ephs had
trouble converting. At the 37:36 mark, freshman Sam Vilboa took
advantage of her own deflected shot right in front of net, but her
second shot was blocked again by a Jumbo defender. Annelise Snyder
ripped a shot that nicked the left post with twelve minutes to play.
Finally, at the 85:58 mark, the Ephs found the back of the net.
Fellow senior captain Sarah Walmsley played a cross from the right side
that was deflected by the Jumbos' keeper at the right post. The ball
sailed behind her, allowing Wolfson to capitalize on an empty net and
tap the ball in.
The Jumbos look to hold on to fourth place in NESCAC when they play
their regular-season finale at Bowdoin next Friday afternoon. The Ephs
will travel to Middlebury next Friday.
