Game Statistics

NORTON -- In a contest between two of the top four teams in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) New England poll, the Tufts University women's soccer team notched a 2-0 victory over Wheaton College on Wednesday in Mirrione Stadium.

The Lyons, who are ranked eighth nationally and second in the region, had their 23-game regular season home winning streak snapped in falling to 8-2. This was their first regular season home loss by more than one goal since October 5, 1996. The Jumbos, who are receiving votes in the national poll and stand fourth in New England , are 3-0 after posting their third shutout.

Tufts produced the first good opportunity of the contest during the ninth minute, as a corner kick led to a pair of point-blank shots being blocked out front, before Wheaton 's offense nearly broke on the board. In the 21st minute, Wheaton hit the right post and a follow-up attempt from a sharp angle sailed over a vacated cage.

The Jumbos notched the only goal they would need in the 42nd minute, as sophomore Sarah Nolet's (Los Altos, CA) free kick toward the upper right corner of the frame eluded Lyons freshman keeper Lindsay Leddy's (Warwick, RI) grasp at 41:28.

After holding a slight 8-5 edge in first-half shots, Wheaton doubled up Tufts, 14-7, in the second period thanks to a handful of near misses, finishing the contest with a 22-12 advantage. Wheaton junior Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA) sprung freshman Emily Vincunas (Granville, MA) for a one-on-one run in the 78th minute, but Tufts junior keeper Hannah Jacobs (Mill Valley, CA) rushed to the edge of the box to knock away Vincunas' initial touch before a shot could be fired. A minute later, Alvarez rushed the left flank, but Jacobs denied her on the short side of the net.

The Jumbos iced the victory with less than four minutes remaining, as junior Fanna Gamal (Albany, CA) sent a pass from the center of the box to the left side and cutting classmate Cara Cadigan (Nahant, MA), who rolled the ball into the lower right corner past a diving Leddy. The goal was her third of the season.

Junior Kate Minnehan ( Hopkinton , NH /Hopkinton) started and earned the win for Tufts after making one first-half stop, while Jacobs made six saves in the second half. Leddy finished with two saves, as Wheaton had its regular-season home shutout streak come to an end at 969:01. The Lyons had yielded just one marker in its past 16 home games.

Tufts plays its Homecoming game on Saturday against Bates College in a NESCAC match. Wheaton continues its three-game homestand on Saturday against Mount Holyoke College, as the Lyons open their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule.
