Single-season scoring record-holder Cara Cadigan netted the lone Jumbo goal

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University Jumbos used solid defense and a lone goal in the first half to defeat Colby College, 1-0, in a NESCAC women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field. It was the 2008 season opener for Tufts.

Junior Cara Cadigan (Nahant, MA), who set the Tufts single-season scoring record with 19 goals and 45 points last year, picked up where she left off. Cadigan provided the offense in the 23rd minute when she followed her own shot that bounced off the Colby goalkeeper and netted the rebound for a 1-0 lead. Tufts out-shot Colby for the game, 7-2.

The Jumbos used the goalkeeping combination of junior Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH) and sophomore Hannah Jacobs (Mill Valley, CA) en route to the shutout, as Jacobs recorded the only save for Tufts.

The Mules also used two keepers, as senior Rachel Freirman (Cambridge, MA) was scored on in the first half, but she did register three saves. Sophomore Loni Pisani (Kanata, Canada) recorded a diving save in the 60th minute to rob Tufts sophomore Sarah Nolet (Los Altos, CA) of a goal.

Tufts begins the season at 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the NESCAC, while Colby falls to 2-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the NESCAC. The Jumbos return to action next Saturday afternoon when they host Connecticut College at 11 am. Colby hosts the University of New England on Tuesday at 4:30 pm.
