Game Box Score

LEWISTON, Me. -- Sophomore Cara Cadigan (Nahant, MA) scored in the eighth minute and it stood up as the game-winner as Tufts University defeated Bates College 1-0 in a NESCAC women's soccer game Saturday. The conference-leading Jumbos won for the fifth straight game and raised their overall record to 6-1 and their conference mark to 4-0. Bates falls to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in NESCAC play.

Cadigan gathered the ball from sophomore Ali Maxwell (Exeter, NH) near the top of the penalty area and threaded a shot through the Bates defense and into the top middle of the Bates goal. The goal continued a remarkable start to the season for Cadigan. She's averaging a goal per game with seven.

The shutout is the fourth of the year for Tufts. It is the sixth shutout loss for the Bobcats and the fifth time they've lost by a 1-0 score this season. Tufts goalie Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH) made six saves for the shutout, as Bates held a slight 13-12 edge in shots taken. Bates senior Nini Spalding made seven saves of her own.

Both teams had several scoring opportunities, with most coming in the first half. Tufts senior co-captain Martha Furtek (East Falmouth, MA) had a shot saved by Spalding in the third minute and tried to knock in the rebound, only to have a Bates defender clear. In the eighth minute, Bates senior Molly Wagner's (Longmeadow, MA) shot hit the crossbar and the right post, but Minnehan saved the ball from crossing the goal line.

Tufts threatened to pad its lead with 18 minutes left in the game, as first-year Geneva DeGregorio's (Whately, MA) high shot arched toward the far post before Spalding caught it for the save.

Tufts will host Brandeis on Wednesday at 4:00 before welcoming Bowdoin on Homecoming Day next Saturday. Bates next plays at Williams next Saturday at 11 a.m.
