BRUNSWICK, Me. -- In a match between two teams who entered Saturday part of a three-way tie for fourth place in NESCAC, the Tufts University women's soccer team got a first-half goal from senior co-captain Becky Greenstein (Newton, MA) and held off a late Bowdoin charge to take a 1-0 win on Saturday.
Greenstein converted a direct kick past Bowdoin netminder Anna Shapell at 12:44 of the first half and the goal proved to be enough as the Jumbos avenged last year's 1-0 loss in Medford. Bowdoin had numerous chances, including eight corner kicks, but failed to get the equalizer.
The shutout is the first of the year for the Jumbos. Senior Meg McCourt (Rochester, NY) made five saves in the victory, while Shapell made eight stops in the defeat.
The Jumbos, now winners of three of their last four, improve to 3-3-2 overall on the season and 2-1-2 in the conference. The Polar Bears drop to 5-4-1 and 2-3-1.
Tufts has another conference battle on Tuesday when Wesleyan comes to Somerville for a 4:00 tilt. Bowdoin will return to action next Saturday at Connecticut College.
