MIDDLETOWN, CT -- Sophomore Sarah Callaghan (Northborough, MA) had a goal and an assist as the Tufts University Women's Soccer team stopped a three-game losing streak in NESCAC play with a 2-1 victory at Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon. The Jumbos jumped to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Cardinals remained winless in the league at 0-6 while falling to 2-9 overall.
The visiting Jumbos wasted no time in taking the lead as Callaghan set up junior Becky Greenstein (Newton, MA) in the second minute for a 1-0 Jumbo lead. Despite limited offensive opportunities, the host Cardinals were able to tie the score 28 minutes into the first half on a goal by Sarah Hopkins. It remained 1-1 until the break.
After halftime, the Jumbos scored quickly again with Callaghan converting a pass from NESCAC Player of the Week Jen Baldwin (Medway, MA) just six minutes into the second half for a 2-1 Tufts lead. They did not allow Wesleyan the equalizer this time.
Tufts finished with a 22-2 advantage in shots, dominating a conference match for the first time in over three weeks after losses to Bates, Bowdoin and Trinity. The Jumbos forced Wesleyan keeper Jenny Hipscher into making 13 saves. Tufts junior Meg McCourt (Rochester, MA) earned the victory while not recording a single save.
