MEDFORD Senior Lynn Cooper (Wilton, CT) scored in the 29th minute and an overpowering Tufts effort made it stand for a 1-0 Jumbo victory against Brandeis University in a women's soccer match between the local rivals on Tuesday afternoon.
Disappointed with the team's first-half performances so far this season, Tufts head coach Martha Whiting shook things up by starting five freshmen. Host Tufts went on to dominate the game, despite the close final tally. They posted a 36-7 advantage in shots, including 18-2 in the first half.
Cooper's goal, her third of the year and the 33rd of her career, was the only shot to reach the back of the net. She was set up by sophomore Jess Trombly (Nashua, NH). The Jumbos continued to assault the Brandeis cage throughout the game, hitting the crossbar and the post during the second half. Senior keeper Kerry Bronnenkant (Boylston, MA) made 13 saves, including eight in the second half, for the Judges.
Brandeis did manage six corner kick opportunities. Tufts senior Mara Schanfield (St. Paul, MN) made four saves, three in the second half, to record her second shutout of the season and fourth of her career. Freshman Becky Greenstein (Newton, MA) led the Tufts attack with six shots. Senior Melissa Purswell (Exeter, NH) had three shots for the Judges.
The Jumbos have won four straight over Brandeis and eight of the last nine.
