WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.. - The host Williams Ephs scored twice within 84 seconds late in the second half and it held up for a 2-1 victory over the Tufts Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
The teams played scoreless soccer for 73 minutes in a steady rain until Williams freshman Stacey Starner scored from just outside the six-yard box after dribbling through the penalty area. Not long after that, senior Jill Carterer extended the Ephs' lead to 2-0 by putting away a rebound off a shot by Starner.
Five minutes after that, sophomore Lynn Cooper (Wilton, CT) put Tufts on the scoreboard with another rebound goal, her team-high eighth of the season, and the Jumbos were in the game with approximately 10 minutes remaining in regulation. They could not score the equalizer, though, and their unbeaten streak over the course of the last month ended at six.
Williams entered the game ranked #1 in New England, while Tufts was sixth. The Jumbos dropped to 8-3-1 overall and the Ephs improved to 10-1-1 after losing their first to Middlebury during the week.
The Jumbos host Brandeis on Tuesday (Oct. 26) before the regular-season finale against Amherst on Homecoming Day next Saturday (Oct. 30).
