Julia Baily netted a career-high 27 points

MEDFORD -- Junior Julia Baily (Farmington, CT) scored a career-high 27 points on 12 for 18 shooting and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds as the #16 Tufts University women's basketball team opened Cousens Gymnasium for a new season with a 92-67 victory over Endicott College on Tuesday night.

Bailey helped Tufts (3-0) shoot 57.6 percent from the field overall (38/66) against the Gulls (2-1). Sophomore guard Colleen Hart (Needham, MA) added 18 points and four steals, while senior center Katie Tausanovitch (Lyme, NH) submitted 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Senior tri-captain Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, NH) led Endicott with 18 points, four steals and three assists. Junior Gull Ceciley Chisholm (Lexington, MA) finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.

The Jumbos never trailed in the game after opening baskets by Tausanovitch and senior co-captain Kim Moynihan (West Hartford, CT). They jumped to an early 10-3 margin on a Tausanovitch put-back. Endicott was within 18-15 on a lay-up by Duchesne, and a free throw by Gulls junior Kaylin Burke (Leominster, MA) made it 26-21 Jumbos with 6:51 on the clock. That's as close as Endicott would be for the remainder of the game.

An 11-4 Tufts run featuring six Baily points pushed the host's lead into double-figures at 37-25 with 3:24 remaining in the first half. Endicott would cut it down to nine (41-32), but Tufts had a 44-34 advantage at the break. Baily had 16 at the half for Tufts, while Duchesne was at seven for the Gulls.

A lay-up and a three-pointer by Hart was part of a 7-0 opening run in the second half that ballooned the Jumbo lead to 17 at 51-34. The difference hit 20 on a three ball by senior co-captain Stacy Filocco (Olney, MD) at the 16:30 mark. The Tufts lead would be in the 20s for the rest of the night, topping out at 29 points four times. The earliest occasion was 71-42 after a steal by junior Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) leading to a Hart lay-up at 12:09. Over the first eight minutes of the second half, the Jumbos out-scored the Gulls 27-8.

Tufts was able to empty the bench, getting 16 players into the game. The highlight of that situation was the first career points scored by sophomore Emily Edwards-Bourdrez (Northport, NY) and first-year Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA). Sullivan finished 5 for 5 from the floor for her 10 points. First-year Rachel Figaro (Windham, NH) added eight points, five rebounds and two assists, helping Tufts post a 40-30 tally in the rebound margin. Junior Vanessa Miller (Cincinnati, OH) had a game-high five assists.

Endicott went to the foul line 30 times, hitting 19 including a 7 for 10 performance by Duchesne. Senior tri-captain Nicole Young (Rockland, MA) led the Gulls with seven boards to go with six points and two assists. Burke finished at six points, four assists and three steals.
