WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- The Tufts University and Eastern Connecticut State University womens basketball teams -- coming off 20-win seasons and NCAA tournament appearances -- will meet in the championship game of the 2008 Eastern Tip-Off Tournament after posting easy first-round wins on Saturday at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard Colleen Hart (Needham, MA) sank three-pointers on Tufts first two possessions and the Jumbos routed Mount Ida College (1-3), 95-35, in their first Eastern Tip-Off Tournament showing in the womens nightcap. Eastern (1-0) doubled Castleton State Colleges (2-1) point total in the second half in a 63-37 win in the first first-round game. The championship game is scheduled Sunday at 3 p.m. Castleton will face Mount Ida in Sundays third-place encounter at 1 p.m.

The games were the season-openers for both Eastern and Tufts. Tufts won 26 of 30 games last year en route to the NCAA Division III tournament Elite Eight. Eastern won 24 of 29 games last season and qualified for NCAA tournament play, losing a first-round game. The championship game match-up will be the first meeting between the programs.

All 17 players saw time for Tufts, with 14 of them contributing a point and 16 at least one rebound. Hart was the teams only double-figure scorer. She had a game-high 16 points, sinking six of nine field goals (4 for 4 three-pointers) and also handed out seven assists. Six-foot-three inch senior Katie Tausanovitch (Lyme, NH) led Tufts with eight rebounds. The Jumbos forced 35 turnovers and held their opponent to 26.0 percent shooting (13/50) from the floor. Tufts collected 17 steals and seven blocked shots, out-rebounded the Mustangs by 18, and converted 50.6 percent of its field goals.
