BRUNSWICK, Me. -- The Tufts University women's basketball team
outscored Bowdoin 18-7 over the final 6:22, breaking open a tie game
to take an eventual 67-56 NESCAC victory on Saturday. The #11
Jumbos, who had been upset by Colby College on Friday night, improve
to 13-2 (3-1 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 14-4 (2-1). It is
Tufts' first win in Brunswick since 1991.
Bowdoin controlled the early minutes of Saturday's contest,
jumping out to a 10-2 lead thanks to a pair of early Leah Rubega
jump shots. The Polar Bears went cold late in the half however, as
the Jumbos rolled off a 19-1 run over a span of 11 minutes to take a
24-13 lead. Bowdoin responded with a flurry of late baskets and tied
the game at halftime on a 40-foot buzzer-beater by Katie Bergeron,
28-28.
The teams traded buckets throughout most of the second half with
neither team holding more than a four-point advantage. With the game
tied at 49-49 with 6:22 on the clock, Tufts first-year guard
Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, MA) netted a driving lay-in to spark a
decisive 16-2 run for the Jumbos. Senior co-captain Kim Moynihan
(West Hartford, CT) buried a three-pointer in the surge and
sophomore guard Colleen Hart (Needham, MA) nailed a long
jumper and capped the run with a trifecta of her own to give the
visitors a 65-51 lead with a minute remaining.
Five Jumbos scored in double-digits, led by Hart's 12 with five
assists. Moynihan posted 11 points and six boards while junior guard
Vanessa Miller (Cincinnati, OH), junior guard Casey
Sullivan (Berlin, CT) and first-year Rachel Figaro (Windham,
NH) scored 10 apiece.
Bowdoin was led by 13 points and nine rebounds from Alexa Kaubris.
Katie Bergeron also scored 13 points for the Polar Bears.
