MEDFORD -- Junior Katie Tausanovitch (Lyme, NH) scored 27
points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had four assists for Tufts in a
76-64 women's basketball victory over local foe Babson College on
Tuesday night at Cousens Gym.
A transfer from Division I William & Mary, Tausanovitch scored on
13 of 17 shots. She showed a soft touch, hitting several outside
jumpers. Her 12 points at the half helped Tufts to a 42-27 lead, and
she scored 15 more in the second half. Senior Linsey Poulson
(Leominster, MA) scored 21 points to lead Babson (1-3).
The Jumbos, who at 5-0 are off to their best start since the
2004-05 season, did not trail in the game. Barely five minutes into
the contest they were up 14-2 as junior Kim Moynihan (West
Hartford, CT) scored eight points in the early-going. Babson
closed the margin to 18-11 at the 11-minute mark on a lay-up by
senior co-captain Nicole McManus (Baldwinsville, NY). That's as
close as they would be for the rest of the game.
Tufts put the game away by coming out of the locker room and
out-scoring the Beavers 10-2 in the first few minutes of the second
half. Tausanovitch had six points during that stretch and the Jumbos
led by 23 (52-29).The lead got as high as 26 points, 61-35, after a
three-pointer by Tufts first-year point guard Colleen Hart
(Needham, MA) at 11:34. Babson chipped away down to the final
margin of 12 points behind first-year Rebecca Bowman (Melrose, MA)
and Poulson, who scored 14 points apiece in the second half.
Moynihan added 12 points, six rebounds and two steals to the
Tufts effort, which included a 47-37 edge in rebounds. Senior
co-captain Khalilah Ummah (Litchfield, ME) finished with
eight points, seven boards and three blocks. Hart had nine points
and six assists.
Bowman finished at 16 points for Babson, which also got nine
points and 11 rebounds from McManus. First-year Kristy Benoit
(Shrewsbury, MA) submitted five points, five assists and four steals
off the bench.
