MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Leading 25-22 at intermission, Tufts went on a 19-3 run to start the second half to earn a 61-46 victory over Middlebury at Pepin Gym Friday night. The win improves the Jumbos record to 19-1, 5-1 in the NESCAC, and ties their school record for victories in a season. The Panthers drop to 11-10 and 2-4 in league play. Both teams return to NESCAC action on Saturday as Middlebury host Bates, while Tufts travels to Williams.

Middlebury jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, with buckets by Lani Young and Emily Johnson, before Tufts went on a 5-0 spurt with 15:11 remaining. The back-and-forth first half saw a total of 10 lead changes, as neither team led by more than four points. With the game knotted at 22 apiece in the final seconds of the half, Tufts senior co-captain Jenna Gomez (Norfolk, MA) collected a turnover and dropped in a three as time expired for a 25-22 Jumbo advantage at the break.

First-year guard Colleen Harts (Needham, MA) three-pointer sparked the pivotal second half run for Tufts, as she collected eight of her game-high 18 points during the span. The Jumbos built a 44-25 advantage by the 10:45 mark, before Middlebury answered with a 16-8 run, closing the gap to 52-41 with 5:19 left to play. Young was key for the Panthers during that stretch, scoring nine of her team-high 13 points. The Panthers could not break the double-digit Tufts advantage in the remaining minutes though.

Harts 18 points led all scorers, while junior Katie Tausanovitch (Lyme, NH) chipped in 10 for Tufts. Senior co-captain Khalilah Ummah (Litchfield, ME) collected a game-high 11 rebounds, as Hart grabbed 10 more for the Jumbos, who out-rebounded the Panthers 52-32 during the game. Youngs 11 points paced Middlebury, while Johnson netted 10.

Tufts finished 19-3 under Coach Sharon Dawley for the 1986-87 season. They have a chance to top that mark tomorrow at Williams.
