BABSON PARK --Tufts University built a 17-point lead midway through the second
half and then withstood a furious comeback attempt by host Babson
College as the Jumbos held on for a 65-61 victory in a
non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night. With the
win, Tufts improved to 3-1, while Babson slipped to 1-3.
Tufts
began pulling away late in the first half, as senior
Valerie Krah (Mountain Lakes, NJ)
scored nine points during a 13-4 run that gave the Jumbos a 25-16
advantage. The visitors eventually took a 32-23 lead into the half,
and then pushed that margin to as many as 17 after a conventional
three-point play by sophomore
Stacy Filocco (Olney, MD) made it 56-39 with 12 minutes
remaining.
Facing
its largest deficit of the game, Babson came storming back with a
22-6 run down the stretch, culminating with a baseline jumper by
senior Suzy Ward (North Attleboro, MA)
that pulled the Beavers to within one, 62-61, with 30 seconds
remaining. Junior Jenna Gomez (Norfolk, MA) then drew a foul
with 23.8 seconds left and hit both freebies to push the Jumbos'
lead to three, and Babson junior Caitlin Boulier's (Wolcott, CT)
three-point attempt to tie at the other end came up short to give
the ball back to Tufts. Senior Taryn Miller-Stevens (Avon, CT) would draw a foul and
miss the first with 1.6 seconds left, but her second attempt went
down to clinch the 65-61 victory.
Krah
finished with 19 points to lead Tufts, while Gomez added a
double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Junior
Khalilah Ummah (Litchfield, ME) also finished in double-figures
with 10 points, and senior Libby Park (Massena, NY) chipped in with seven points
and nine rebounds.
Boulier
shook off a slow start to finish with 19 points for Babson, while
Ward contributed 15 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Junior
Bekie Berg (West Brookfield, MA) continued her stellar rebounding streak
with 12 boards, including seven off the offensive glass, while
junior Nicole McManus (Baldwinsville, NY) grabbed nine caroms.
