SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior backup center Khalilah Ummah (Litchfield, ME) had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead visiting Tufts University to a 73-56 victory over Western New England College in  the first meeting between the schools in 11 years.

Senior guard Valerie Krah (Mountain Lakes, NJ) added 13 points while senior forward Laura Jasinski (Leverett, MA) and senior center Libby Park (Massena, NY) each contributed 11 points as the Jumbos improved to 2-1 with their second straight win.

Tufts made its first three shots of the game for a 7-0 lead and jumped to a 21-8 advantage following two free throws by freshman guard Vanessa Miller (Cincinnati, OH) with 11:31 left in the half. The Golden Bears (1-2) scored the last five points before the break to cut the margin to 35-30 at intermission.

Tufts started strong in the second stanza taking a 45-34 lead before WNEC got within seven (45-38) when freshman forward Caitlin Powers (Scotia, NY) made a pair of free throws at the 12:21 mark. The Jumbos went on a 15-2 run capped by a basket by Jasinski for a comfortable 60-40 lead with 8:14 left in the game and coasted down the stretch.

Junior guards Tiffany DeRosa (Hamden, CT) and Jen Dabrowski (Plainville, CT) led the Golden Bears with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Tufts had a 47-36 advantage in rebounds, including a big 22-11 edge off  the offensive boards.
