MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Host Wesleyan built a big lead and held on for a 62-50 victory over Tufts University in NESCAC women's basketball action on Friday night.

The Cardinals remained first in NESCAC with the victory, improving to 13-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Jumbos, who lost their fifth straight game, fell to 7-10 and 1-4 in NESCAC. They are currently ninth in the league.

Wesleyan opened a 12-3 after 6:20 of play and led by as many as 24 (34-10) with 2:40 left in the first half. They held a 34-18 edge at halftime, shooting 60 percent (15/25) compared to 20 percent (6/30) by Tufts. In the second half, the Jumbos whittled a 20-point deficit at 8:47 to eight (50-42) at 4:38. However, the host Cardinals scored next seven points for a 57-42 advantage at 3:40 and held on for win.

Hannah Stubbs led the Cardinals with 16 points, while Meghan Robinson finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Ashley Mastrangelo had 12 points and six rebounds. The Cardinals finished at 53.2 percent (25/47) for the game. Nikki Maletta and Sarah Milburn each had five assists.

Tufts junior Valerie Krah (Mountain Lakes, NJ) was the only scorer in double-digits with 12 points, while adding four assists and two steals. Junior Laura Jasinski (Leverett, MA) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds along with seven points. Sophomore Khalilah Ummah (Litchfield, ME) also had nine boards. The Jumbos shot just 27.4 percent (17/62) overall, including 5 for 21 (23.8%) from three-point territory.
