WENHAM -- In non-conference play today, the Tufts Women's Basketball team improved its record to 5-0 with an 84-64 victory at Gordon College. The Fighting Scots fell to 0-4.
unior guard Jessica Powers (Massapequa, NY) led the Jumbos with 21 points while also adding eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior point guard Julia Verplank (Zeeland, MI) had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Jumbos. Senior-captain Sarah DeLuca had a banner night for the Scots, netting 28 points and ripping 10 rebounds, while senior guard Genny McWhorter chipped in 15 points and three assists.
The first half was tight throughout. The Jumbos opened up a 10-point advantage, 24-14, on a three-pointer by senior co-captain Erin Connolly (Syosset, NY) at 8:07. Gordon was able to cut the margin to 33-31 at halftime on a last-second shot by DeLuca.
The Tufts lead remained in single digits for the first six minutes of the second half until the Jumbos ignited a 23-6 run to lead 65-44 on a three-point play by Powers with 7:39 to play. Her 11 points during the stretch led the way. The margin then hovered around 20 points for the rest of the night. Tufts out-scored the Fighting Scots 51-33 overall in the second half.
Tufts turned the ball over just eight times and earned a 52-40 edge in rebounding. Sophomore Valerie Krah (Mountain Lakes, NJ) added 18 points to the Tufts cause, hitting 7 of 12 shots.
