WATERVILLE, Me. - Regina Wohl (Westbrook, ME) had 16 points, including a big 3-point shot late in the game, to lift the Colby College women's basketball team to a 59-54 win over Tufts University in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener for both teams on Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium. Colby improved to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Tufts fell to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Wohl nailed a 3-point shot with 2:28 left in the game to break a 48-48 tie and put the Mules up for good. Wendy Bonner (Lexington, MA) hit two free throws with 1:51 remaining to put Colby up 53-48 and Tufts never got closer than three points the rest of the way. Colby made its last five free throws of the game and shot 20 for 25 for the game and was 19 for 23 from the foul line in the second half.
Tufts, which led 21-20 at halftime, received 16 points and five assists from sophomore Valerie Krah (Mountain Lakes, NJ). Sophomore Laura Jasinski (Leverett, MA) had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Jumbos.
Tanya Rosbash (Newton, MA) added 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals for Colby. Kathleen Nicholson (Tuftonboro, NH) had eight points, eight rebounds and six assists. Bonner finished with nine points.
