UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- The Tufts University Women's Basketball team built an early lead and never looked back while posting an 84-49 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham in the first round of the MSU Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday night. Tufts will meet host Montclair State on Sunday for the MSU Tip-Off Tournament championship at 3:00 p.m.
The season-opening win improved Tufts to 1-0, while the Devils dropped to 0-1. The Jumbos jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first eight minutes as Jessica Powers (Massapequa, NY) had five points and Julia Verplank (Zeeland, MI) and Allison Love (Duxbury, MA) each contributed four in the run.
Senior tri-captain Kate Gluckman (Morrisville, VT) led Tufts scorers with 14 points, while Love finished with 13. Verplank ended up with 12 points and six steals, while Powers had 11 points and four steals. Tufts forced the Devils into 36 turnovers.
The Jumbos had some strong debut efforts, as freshman Valerie Krah (Mountain Lakes, NJ) scored 12 points and classmate Danielle Vardaro (North Reading, MA) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Pamela Sagehorn had 13 points and Ashley Flaherty added 12 points and 10 rebounds for FDU-Florham.
