LEWISTON, Me. - Betsy Hochadel (Portland, ME) tied a career high with 18 points on 7 for 10 shooting to lead the Bates College women's basketball team to a 70-58 win over Tufts in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon in Alumni Gymnasium.
Hochadel,
who scored 12 of her points in the first half, also scored 18 points in the
NESCAC Championship quarterfinal against Tufts on Feb. 22, 2003 – the last
meeting between the two teams.
The Bobcats slowly built an 11-point lead in the first half, but the Jumbos responded by closing the half with six straight points, and Tufts trailed by just two after sophomore guard Jessica Powers (Massapequa, NY) hit a 3-pointer on the first possession of the second half.
Tufts
was back within two points again when junior forward Allison Love's (Duxbury,
MA) lay-up made the score 40-38, but Bates responded with an 8-0 run, and
the Jumbos got no closer than six points for the remainder of the game.
Olivia
Zurek (Arlington, MA) scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Bates, and
Meg Coffin (Westford, MA) scored 10 points for the Bobcats, who improved to
10-6,
Love recorded a double-double for the Jumbos with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Powers added 16 points for Tufts, which fell to 9-4, 2-1.
