MEDFORD, Mass. -- Senior co-captain Molly Baker (Northfield, MA) scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Tufts Jumbos posted a big 64-63 victory over Williams College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action on Friday night.
The victory, coming against the #8 team in New England, was the fifth in a row for Tufts. The Jumbos improved to 14-5 overall, the most wins by the team since the 1994-95 season, and 3-3 in the NESCAC. Williams fell to 15-7 overall and 4-3 in the league.
Tufts led throughout the game and had a 12-point margin with six minutes remaining. A surge by Williams brought them to within five, but with 2:46 left in the game Williams coach Pat Manning was given a technical foul. Tufts freshman Emily Goodman (Briarcliff, NY), who was fouled on the play that was argued, sank three of four free throws to put the Jumbos up by eight.
The Ephs clawed back and with 30 seconds left trailed by just one, 64-63. They missed a flury of shots in the waning seconds, then Jumbo junior Shira Fishman (Silver Spring, MD) stole an in-bounds pass with three seconds left to ice the win for the Jumbos. It was Tufts' first victory over the Ephs in five years.
Tufts will try to match a six-game winning streak from 1998 when it hosts Middlebury College in a NESCAC game on Saturday (Feb. 19) afternoon. Tip-off is at 3 pm.
