MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Wellesley College basketball team, which led the country in scoring defense (40.4 ppg allowed) entering this week, allowed just 13 points in the second half while coming from behind to post a 57-44 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in New England women's college basketball action on Thursday night.
The victory was the eighth straight for Wellesley, which improved to 9-1 overall. Tufts (5-1), resuming play after their semester break, lost for the first time this season.
The Jumbos led 31-24 at the half, but visiting Wellesley dominated in the second. They out-scored Tufts 33-13 during the period, including a decisive 15-2 run that turned a three-point Tufts lead (36-33) at 12:08 into a 48-38 Wellesley advantage with 4:49 remaining. Freshman Kelly Grover (Westbrook, ME) had eight points during the key stretch that gave Wellesley the double-digit lead. Tufts, who led big in the first half and then hit just four of 28 field goal attempts in the second half, could not get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
No Jumbos reached double-figures in the scoring column, with freshman Emily Goodman (Briarcliff, NY) leading the way with eight points and seven rebounds. Grover finished with 14 and 11 while junior co-captain Meg Barao (Norwell, MA) added a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds for Wellesley.
